Academics are what are important. That's why the B1G wanted Stanford and Cal, because they are head and shoulders above the next best academic school in the old PAC

That's also why Cal is willing to endure huge athletic deficits because only research budgets matter.

That's also why the PAC would never deign to invite Alabama because it's an inferior academic school and athletic performance is completely irrelevant.
