When I was growing up the Utah Valley school districts (especially Alpine) were
notorious for avoiding weather closures at all costs. There was one year when I was in 5th or 6th grade when we got something ridiculous like 18 inches of snow overnight. Alpine, Provo, and Nebo were basically the only districts on the Wasatch Front that didn't close.

My entire 13 years of lower education we had one weather day, and that was only because a transformer blew out and the power was off.

So, yes, with a full understanding of how things operate differently in different parts of the country, it is still very ironic to me personally that I've gone from that, to now living in an area where they start announcing closures when the forecast looks iffy. The storm hasn't even arrived yet.
