I really want them to make a push for the Tulane DC. But the more I look at it, that's just not who we are. Pretty much every coach we hire break down into one of 2 categories
- Former BYU players
- Former coaches at Utah, USU, or Boise St (or FCS schools in Utah)
Here's the current BYU staff that falls into those categories
- Kalani Sitake - former BYU player, former Utah DC
- Ed Lamb - former BYU players, former SUU HC
- Ilasa Tuiaki - family friend, former Utah DL coach, former USU RB coach
- Aaron Roderick - former BYU player, former coach at Snow, SUU and Utah
- Fesi Sitake - literally family, former coach at Weber St and SUU
- Steve Clark - former coach at Utah, SUU, and Weber St
- Jernaro Gilford - former BYU player, former SUU coach
- Preston Hadley - former BYU player, former Weber St coach
- Harvey Unga - former BYU player, has only coached at BYU since starting there as grad assistant
- Kevin Clune - former coach at Utah, SUU, Weber St AND Utah St
- Nu'u Tafisi (Director of S&C) - former S&C assistant at both Boise St and Utah
And current BYU staff that doesn't fall into those categories
There are good coaches from the former group (see Fesi for a clear example) and no guarantees that coaches in the latter group will be good... But if we want to expand recruiting beyond Utah, Arizona, Idaho and members we need to stop being so incestuous in our coaching hires.
Even Grimes, our lauded "outside hire" was returning to BYU for a second stint. And had been at Boise St before that. Hiring an up and comer with no BYU (or nearby school) connections just isn't something we do
