Honest question: If we were currently a PAC-12 team and just finished playing a 9 game conference schedule, do you think we would have won all 9? Do you think we could win 8?
My best guess is a 7-2 conference record for BYU if they were in the PAC this year. Some fans might be too young to remember the rigors of a conference schedule, and there’s some older fans that suddenly have selective amnesia.
Don’t get me wrong, BYU going 5 for 5 vs the PAC is EXTREMELY impressive and this season is going to hold a special place in my heart for several reasons, but some Y fans are going to be extremely disappointed when Big 12 play starts and 10 win seasons become the exception and not the rule.
For those of us old enough, remember the WAC days and the times BYU landed in Hawaii with a far superior team only to leave the island with an inexplicable “L”? Remember the Scott Mitchell game? Remember being in the top 15 and somehow going down to the wire versus an absolutely awful UTEP team? Then there’s the MWC days, where BYU would be cruising right along and then stub their toe vs a UNLV or Colorado St?
Let me make 1 thing clear: BYU in the B12 is going to be glorious, but conference play is a minefield of mishaps just waiting to happen. When you have OK State in week 4 and Baylor in week 6, it’s hard to keep young men focused on a week 5 match-up vs Kansas. Teams get to know each other and wackiness ensues.
Ok, I’ve ranted so long, I’ve now forgotten my point. Go Cougs!!!
