Except - he was saying "no evidence they are true".
So - if you are correct and saying something repeatedly is endorsing that something, then what he was endorsing was the fact that there was no evidence to support the rumors.
Everyone is acting like they were just repeating the rumors. That isn't true. They were saying there was no evidence to support the rumors.
