Virtually no women’s program generates a net operating income. Many men’s programs also rely on revenues generated by football and men’s basketball to survive. Now that the free market will be a partner in college athletics, won’t there be market pressures for colleges to abandoned those programs that draw dollars away from the fund needed to compensate top players for their revenue-generating teams? If not, why not? Ultimately, won’t that result in fewer men’s programs, which will open the door under Title IX to eliminate some women’s programs?
