My son went that route as well but graduated with very little debt

And had three other offers that would have left him in a similar spot. I just see so many go all in on BYU and then not get in and not know that there are dozens of other great schools who will pay you enough in scholarship money to cost less than BYU if you really have the grades and test scores to apply to BYU

It’s really not arbitrary. The kids with good qualifications still generally get in. Essays just matter more now.
