What pick 6 against AFA in week 2??
There was a week 2 AFA game in 2010 where Heaps threw a pick but that INT was only returned for a yard. BYU hasn't played AFA since then. I'm assuming the pick 6 you're referring was the one against Ole Miss in 2011. I've watched the play several times and personally I think it's one of those stories that gets a little exaggerated by CB fans.

From what I can see, Heaps throws the pick and backs himself up and sort of drifts to the left side waiting for the defender to get to his area which in my opinion is the smarter thing for a QB to do when dealing with a player that has at least 20 yards to pick up speed. He's not far from Matt Reynolds who has also backed himself drifting more the left side of the field. When the Ole Miss players gets near the 30, you'll see that both Houston Reynolds and Braden Brown have a clear shot at the guy coming from both sides with Terrence Brown waiting further up but the defender just slips right past all of them. The whole thing happens pretty fast and I think Heaps assumed that the tackle would be made at that stage and the play was going to be over. By the time Heaps realizes what's happened, the guy is off the races. Heaps does run after him but it is too late at that point. Yes, Heaps made an error in judgement by not staying alert and not getting in there to help make the tackle but I don't agree with the notion that he just stood around and did nothing. I think he just knows he's not a fast guy and not a great tackler. Case in point, that same season Heaps throws a pick 6 against Wyoming and does try to run and make the tackle but the Wyoming just blows right past it.

There's a lot of reasons why Heaps never panned out at BYU. He turned out to be not as good as advertised but I wish he had stayed at BYU. I think in the long run his college career would've turned out better even if he wasn't the savior we originally hoped he would be.
