Unfortunately, it's not that athletic a base, as we all know. Which is why we can't rely on it to fill our roster so fully.
This has been Dave's main failing, I think it's pretty clear. And it was the failing of his predecessors at least as much as it's been his.
Cleve was hired 20 years ago in part with a hope of fixing it--but instead of searching high & low for good fits for BYU--he brought in the kids he knew from the Fresno area (with only one working out all that well — Lyday, of course). With Cleve's failure on this front--& also with Crowton & LaVell's recruiting scandals--the BOT really tightened things up. Instead of questioning the specific methods used, they essentially told the HCs at BYU to stop targeting outsiders (unless they came to us, or fell to us, more or less).
