and it's been awhile since BYU has had a QB who was a threat to throw deep...
...since Max Hall left. Max didn't have a great arm but he was adequate and made up for his lack of NFL arm strength by having NFL accuracy on his throws. He could put the ball with regularity in spots that only the WR could catch it and it forced DB's to cross the line to try and break it up.

Since Max left it's been a series of green/flawed QB's(Heaps), QB's with rubber band arms (Nelson) or guys who preferred running to passing and had accuracy issues (Nelson and to a degree Hill).

Tanner has the gunslinger mentality of Max Hall with a better arm. He wasn't that accurate as a freshman but from reports of this summer and fall he's been showing laser-like precision in his throws. Could throw the rivalry into a new light.
