o Hawaii loves playing spoiler and has before in this role against BYU. Detmer has shared his thoughts with the team of winning the Heisman then getting trounced by the Rainbow Warriors…the “W” is all that matters today.
o UH trots out in their retro rainbow uni’s and save a couple trick plays just for BYU. But the Cougs are ready and while UH scores 14 on BYU in the first half, BYU outmatches them, with Detmer’s protégé looking a little Heisman-like himself. Tanner has really blossomed in Ty’s offense toward the end of the year and is absolutely surgical in this offense. At times, some fans (the moron kind) say the offense is “too boring” because Tanner is so good at reading, dissecting the D then taking exactly what is open. His favorite early target this game is Talon Shumway who takes a quick bubble screen 45 yards for a TD in the first, then gets loose on a long post pattern for a 74 yard TD in the second quarter. Throw in a great TD run by Burt (22 yards) and another on a reverse by Dye and BYU is up 28-14 at the half.
o The D takes the 2 first half miscues personally and only allows UH to gain 3 more first downs the entire 2nd half. The play of the game is when Francis Bernard shows off his agility by stepping in front of the UH RB (the checkdown pass), tips the ball to himself to avoid a UH OL and out runs the UH QB and WR into the endzone for a pick 6!
o Hoge is able to get even more reps in the 4th and finally throws a TD pass (this time to KJ Hall) and the Cougs steamroll amazingly dressed Rainbow Warriors. 45-14
