Tyler Whittingham took offense to this (and most likely what the BYU fan was saying to the Ute players to rub salt in their wounds). This led to Tyler wrestling the phone away from BYU fan and throwing it into the stands. BYU fan then goes after Tyler for stealing and most likely destroying his phone. This escalation leads to Mrs. Whittingham getting in to try to break up the melee. Others help to break it up and campus police is then involved. A report is filed, but when Coach Whittingham agrees to pay to replace the phone, the dispute is ended.

Was the BYU fan being a smart ____ when he was snapping the pics of the Utah players? Wouldn't surprise me in the least. Was he initiating anything that would have caused physical harm to himself or anyone around him? Not by a longshot. Tyler Whittingham can't pass that test. He initiated the physical confrontation over someone needlessly taking pictures and talking smack. He should have just walked away.
