While I would agree with a death penalty, the original penalties imposed
by the NCAA were significant and likely would have crippled the program for sometime. The NCAA ultimately caved when Penn State fought them because the NCAA recognized they were on shaking grounds by penalizing the school when no NCAA rules were violated. The violations were criminal acts by Sandusky and a few leaders (including the university president who did a short stint in prison) for failure to report as mandatory reporters.
