I honestly don't think LaVell coached much in practice either. At least not
after he got the program going in the 80s. He setup a system where he was the CEO and his VPs did all the ground work.
I think there is a reason he never moved on to bigger programs or the NFL. He had setup a great situation for himself. His management style wasn't going to work in other places.
