In theory, recruiting ratings shouldn’t matter at all in terms of on the field. It’s just a thing for fanboys like us to obsess over and pay $7 a month, but who cares how recruiting classes are ranked? Isn’t it like ranking NFL draft classes? Once the lights are on no one cares…
Here’s why it matters. For decades schools like BYU weren’t given a fair shot at the playoff and big bowls because “they have lesser talent.”
Now we aren’t even through the first playoff and already SEC honks are complaining because Big 12 teams and SMU didn’t deserve to be there because they got blown out (forgetting that Tennessee and Indiana also got blown out), so they are using this and recruiting rankings as evidence that they should do away with the auto first round bye for teams not in the big 2 conferences. Because honks like cowherd would say that BYUs talent doesn’t compare, so they don’t belong on the same field. Except this analysis and others show that the recruiting rankings are heavily flawed and already slanted to the big guys.
So if you are using a flawed and bias ranking to prove your bias that your team is better then clearly that is doubly bias.
