Could not agree more. I'm honestly stunned how many seem to be calling for
jail time for this kid. I hope those doing so don't have kids so they just don't remember how stupid teenagers are. I worked in young mens for most of the last decade and teen boys are astonishingly clueless to the way world works.

I have some siblings that have done some pretty dumb things just because they weren't thinking about it. I was probably dumber than they were but I don't even remember all the things I did. I do remember throwing a rock at a passing car as an 11 year old kid to impress some friends. The second it left my hand I was thinking "What am I doing?!" Even before it hit the car. The car stopped and the guy justifiably yelled at me.

Just a few weeks ago some middle class senior age kids blew a coworker's mailbox with a homemade dry ice bomb. The kids realized they were going to get caught and contacted him super apologetic and hoping for no charges if they made it right themselves. Why did they do it? Revenge? Some kind of jealous? Nope. It was late and they just thought it would be cool to try to blow something up.

Cut kids some slack people. Realize how immature you probably were and have some empathy for bad decisions made in the heat of the moment. I think the most just thing would be a load of community service, defer sentencing if he stays clean for a year or two. The U of U should ban him from games for life and refuse him entrance to the University, if he wanted to go there. Trust me, he will never forget and it will hit home unless he's a serial killer.
