Interesting - just reading your post (I haven't read the book either)...
...as I read your point about putting a little more into retirement, my initial thought was that instead of putting a little more into retirement, maybe people who are concerned about having experiences with friends and family should keep that "little more" and use it now with family and friends.

My other thought was - maybe you hit retirement with whatever you've got, make your plan for how much to withdraw each year based on having it last as long as you think you need it to, and then just spend some of that withdrawal (assuming it's more than you need for your own expenses) to give to children or spend on activities.

Like you - I'd be too worried about running out. And then what, ask my kids to let me move in with them? I don't see how that benefits them. 😉
