I think it didn't hurt that there had been a personal foul on BYU.
So they were kicking from a place that wasn't deep in their own territory to somewhat mitigate the consequences if BYU were to recover the kick - assuming it was recovered by diving on it rather than running it back.
I assume that without the penalty and the extra 15 yards, they would've just kicked it as normal.
