They have played one time since then. Once. And it was at Georgia. So Georgia has never been to College Station since A&M joined the SEC.
Divisions made quirks that like worse (but so does having giant conferences that keep getting bigger and bigger).
The other problem was that divisions are naturally imbalanced too. The Big Ten West sent a pile of trash to play Ohio State every single year in the Big 10 title game while Michigan, Penn State, and Michigan State were all stuck in the East for rivalry purposes.
Anyway, giant conferences probably means there are no good answers, just less bad ones.
