Serve-receive is far and away the biggest weakness on this team (followed by lack of consistency from the OPP side), and was especially evident against a team like ASU that does it so well. The Sun Devils ran a 6-2 and a very effective double side attack that is only possible if you have great passing, which they did. We only had 2 aces with 13 errors tonight while ASU had 8 aces on just 11 errors. They had our serve receivers guessing all night and more often than not, Bower had to leave the net to go chase the pass, thereby severely limiting our attack.
I will say that the ASU bench yelled out cheers like “Net! Net!..” and waved their arms when we were serving, and “You can’t do that!” a few times when we were called for a net violation. I had never seen that at this level of volleyball and thought it was bush league. Our bench does no such thing, thankfully.
