My ward in Northern California did it every year.
It was actually a lot of fun. A member in our stake had a really big home with a great set-up for entertaining. There were multiple TV’s, so you could pick your group to watch the game with. We had a chef (who formerly worked at the French Laundry) in our Ward, and he grilled up the steaks and prepared the sides (incredibly good!). Our Ward had a handful of Ute grads, including a former player, so they were passionate about their team, but not in a completely toxic way. Unfortunately, BYU was in the midst of the huge losing streak, and I had to endure the 55-10 game at this activity. I can completely understand how the dynamic might be different if you lived in Utah, but it worked well for our Ward.
