1. The alumni. They are respectful, classy, cheer for their school out of tradition and nostalgia, don't have pac-12 stickers on their cars, etc.
2. The fairweathers. If you've been in Utah for more than 20 years, you've seen a huge change in ute support. I don't recall ever seeing Ute logos in Utah county in the 90s. My kids never went to elementary school with Ute fans (we lived in Orem). But as Utahs success grew, people started jumping on the bandwagon. Same reason we have so many freaking Yankees fans in Utah.
3. The Church haters. If they can feel superior to the church they feel like they are winning in life. We all know these fans. It's practically nothing to do with football and everything to do with hating "the enemy".
The question is what is the distribution of the fan base. If utah never gets p5, Group 1 may still support, but much less fervently. Group 2 will not exist. And Group 3 will find other ways to make themselves feel better outside of byu hatred.
If I had to guess, I'd say the spread is 30/40/30. But who really knows?
