I once happened to share an elevator up to the boxes in LES with the UNM coaches on their way up just before the game. I
had the same quandary and ended up saying, “I want to say ‘good luck’… but…”
It kind of pissed one of them off. I heard him repeating it to the other staff in a mocking tone after we left the elevator.
I think he took it as “…but no amount of luck will help you!”
What I meant was “…but I don’t want you to have toooo much luck.”
