Yes, he coulda, woulda, shoulda scooped and scored. That said:
His momentum had carried him past the ball. He didn't know where anybody else was at that point. His focus is on that ball. I've seen it happen tons of times that a defensive player thinks he's gonna scoop and score only to have an offensive player dive on the ball and retain possession. Pausing to look around and see where everybody is at could be giving that offensive player all the time they need to dive in there. I am 100% confident he wanted to scoop and score, but at the moment his momentum had taken him past the ball and he had to stop on a dime and come back to it, I'm okay that he made the safe decision to make sure he secured the ball. Period.
