Ordinary Tri Guy gave good advice.

My son currently plays at a D1 Juco program. We're from a rural area, so he didn't get the exposure to help him with recruiting in HS. We did send him to some college camps, but honestly at the camps he went to, most of the time they usually had eyes for specific players that were already on their radar. I'd say coaches do keep an eye out for potential pitching talent, but if you're a position player...you'd better be already on their radar when you go to a D1 college camp.

It's very helpful to have an unbiased opinion of skill level for recruiting. Also as parents to have realistic expectations. This is so you can target the right schools. My son was below a desirable D1 size player as a high schooler at 5'11/180# at the peak of D1 recruiting, which at the time was the summer before junior year. So due to his size we knew D1 would be tough to get on the radar.

My son opted for the Juco route. He got a full tuition/books/fees scholarship. We also knew that his skill level would probably give him a good chance of actually playing because reality is juco rosters are huge. His school has about 50 players and that's actually on the low side, especially for a historically solid winning program. He's now 200#/6' and been fortunate enough to be a starter as a true freshman. There are guys on his team that are on their 3rd year of school that are still fighting to become a starter. There's a guy that's 25yo. There's also plenty of D1 dropdowns. There's also several players that are so desperate for an advantage they've turned to performance enhancing substances...it's quite sad. He had two HS teammates that went to other jucos and they already quit.

As a position player, the tip we were told was to only go NCAA D1 if you were being considered for the mlb draft. Go D1 juco if you are a legit NCAA D1 skill level. If not, then find yourself a d2/d3/naia program.
