but when I was 35 I didn't even register that as an issue. LASIK was definitely worth it and has been great for the past 18 yrs, but as soon as I hit 51 suddenly I couldn't read my phone and needed to start getting reading glasses.

LASIK doesn't correct for presbyopia. You have to get monovision if you want to have clear vision at near ranges.
