He has has proven to me this year that he has a MUCH better grasp than me or any other CBer when it is right to concede a few yards in order to contain a mobile quarterback and avoid chunk gains. He's also shown he knows when it's the right time to put in some fire and light up the backfield.
This year it's not like the past where it was always a drop 8 coverage. Blitzing, Zone, Cover 2 - He gives a LOT of different looks and the players all understand their assignments within those looks. That's why this D has done so well with keeping teams out of the endzone. Almost all opposing coaches have said something along the lines of "that defense showed us things we weren't expecting". Yes, at times it looked like the opposing team's offense was rolling.... but we have yet to see a team that didn't stall out at some point, which is really demoralizing to an offense - to know that you left points on the field. Heck, that's why so many of us didn't like the look of our offense vs. SMU. When Hill's defense gives up yards, it still comes up with takeaways. Furthermore, our Defenses don't look gassed from ALWAYS being on the field.
Too much good going on with the defense to find fault over conceding more yards on the run than we'd like. Proof is in the pudding. Hope this holds out throughout the rest of the year.
