What was the reason for the delay? Had they bought a connecting ticket on
the same airline?
Check out the DOT airline consumer dashboard. This would be a good place to start to see what the airline will do.

When push comes to shove if you threaten to complain to DOT they will likely take care of you even if they don’t owe you. But not always
