Typically there is space on the top (rail) to push the baluster up, then you
Have space to set the bottom. That how it is for my rail.
Also, mine were set with finish nails in the top and bottom. Basically, I just had to yank them out without destroying the rail.
It was a bit stressful, but worked out on the end.
