Ok. In America there are way more children and adults in competitive swimming than gymnastics. There are 4x as many
female NCAA swimmers than there are female NCAA gymnasts. (14,000 v 3,500)

And that’s when they’ve been eliminated down to college athletes.

More than 10x as many female high school swimmers (if we include boys it’s almost twice that)

16,200 female highschool gymnasts. 173,000 female high school swimmers.

The difference is going to be much more stark the lower you go, where the barrier to entry is far lower for kids to get onto a swim team and swimming competitions than into gymnastics competitions.

It’s just not remotely close.

100% of those swimmers has trained and competed in most of the same events. They have essentially the same swimming heroes (Phelps/Ledecky)
