They can treat them like yield signs. (It's called the Idaho Rule and was passed in Utah in 2021, I believe.)

You might already be aware of it, but I bring it up because I've had motorists get upset over it when they clearly didn't know the law.

To your point though - Yes, no one should be selective with their adherence to rules/laws...even though we all do it. I exceed the speed limit on the freeway regularly.
