It was before I traveled a lot and had any kind of hotel status, but I had a reservation in Midland for a business meeting. Drove there in the afternoon and arrived at like 9PM only to be told that, despite my reservation, they didn't have any rooms available. They had made arrangements with a doors-on-the-outside Motel6 type place on the other side of town that I really had no choice but to go stay at. And I still had to pay $300+ for the night.
It's an interesting town that nobody wants to live in so they have to pay everybody extra to get them to stay there.
