Maybe Tress of the Emerald Sea and Yumi and the Nightmare Painter by Sanderson
good standalone books for those who like fantasy but haven't gotten into Sanderson yet. They are more "cozy romance" types of fantasy. Tress asks the question, "what would the Princess Bride have been like if Buttercup went after Wesley to save him?" and Yumi is basically an anime romance about two people connected but on different worlds.
