all over the spectrum because it is rec. It is local and is just for kids to have fun and get outside & progress in skill and fitness. At that age practices should be all about fun & development. Positions should be rotated no one stuck in that spot. I have been coach a long time because I am old. But I absolutely love the littles My own granddaughter was one of those super timid 5 year olds that needed me to hold her hand on the field.
My advice Absolutely no lines & waiting at that age. All Ball dribble skills all the time. There are million games to play that involve touching keeping a ball at your feet. Tag, sharks & minnows, bump & fun Avoid the cone line slalom everyone waits for one kid to complete. Cone drills only if each kid has their own cone line. My 9 year daughter was a natural super talented blessed with speed and she was recruited by a club coach affiliated with our rec league in her first season. He was an incredible coach and I copied as much as I could from him. His methods were fantastic and I plagiarized everything for my younger sons team.
My boys rec team was a neighborhood team basically 2 wards and few non members neighbors tossed in as 7 year olds they were WDL 1 - 1 - 7 as 8's they were .500 as 9's they were undefeated and we started losing players to club. Eventually we had to become a competitive team. My boys are in their late 20's and I am still coaching Jr High kids and enjoying every minute of it.
But it all starts with making it fun for the kids to be out playing.
