You can pooh-pooh it all you want, but the fact is that it was the only time in
my lifetime that the US federal government didn’t have a deficit, and that the national debt decreased. And there have been many other times besides the ‘90s in which the economy was very strong and new technologies increased productivity. But that was the only time in recent history that we managed to run surpluses and reduce the national debt.
