Then they got remarried and have been back together for quite a while now (they are retired now).

Ministering story: when I first moved into the ward I didn't know any of this backstory. I went over to this guy's house and we visited. During the conversation he said, "what do you think about this whole idea of eternal marriage. Who the heck would want to be married to the same woman for ever?"

I have remembered this comment occasionally as I look forward into the pews and see them sitting together in Sacrament meeting.
