There's a chance he signed a split contract (one that gives him a salary based on number of active weeks). That's not uncommon for younger players who get a prorated min for the weeks they're active and practice squad salary (appx $200k) for weeks they aren't. In his case, it would be a bit different since he's be inactive the entire season and not on the practice squad, but would be a reduced amount between those two numbers.
If he gets cut (also a possibility, though as mentioned, the ability to just put him on IR and not have him take up a roster spot might actually help him NOT get cut) then he obviously gets nothing or practice squad salary (if he ends up there after being cut)
