Nah, you just agreed with me.
The popularity of soccer has nothing to do with the sport itself - other than the limited equipment necessary to field a team and have a game. Baseball is the only other sport that requires so little to get a game started.

All of the emotions and excitement come from the investment you put into a sport as a fan. There are certainly elements of the game in every sport that bring excitement. But to really get excited/emotional about a game or sport, you have to have some degree of investment.

This whole thing started because of the BYU women's soccer game yesterday. Consider these people...

1) A random sports fan in Ohio or Georgia flipping through channels and sees the game, and decides to watch it because it's tied in the 2nd overtime, and they like the drama of close sporting events
2) A BYU sports fan on their couch who is passionate about BYU football and men's basketball, but has a passing interest in the other BYU sports because they love BYU
3) A BYU sports fan who has gone to all/most of the women's soccer home games, and who travelled to California to see the match in person because how often do you get to see the team you love in the Final Four of their sport?

Those 3 fans are going to have very different experiences watching that match.

The 3rd is likely going to be on the edge of their seat or standing up the whole match with nervous energy, very much like the original post described. They are going to be amped out of their mind by the end.

The 2nd may throw out a fist pump or two when that last penalty kick went wide. An exclamation here or there as a shot was saved, or hit the goal post. But their overall demeanor during and at the conclusion of the game will be very different than fan #3.

The first fan will enjoy the overall spectacle of two teams battling it out for a chance to play for a championship, but since they have no attachment to either team or program, they are mostly a passive observer.

The game is the same for all 3, but the level of excitement comes from their background, not from the sport itself.
