I know people are sure that Checketts is just out to "get" BYU. And I'll even agree that Checketts clearly isn't a friend of BYU and has treated them unfairly at times. He has also treated them very fairly at others. But I understand why someone would be skeptical of Spence and not give him the benefit of the doubt.
That said - Spence essentially started the interview saying that he doesn't like to take material for his show from random social media posts - but there's been enough people talking about it that it's hard to ignore. And then he asks the guy (Newman?) about "allegations" - and the guy shoots them down as allegations without any evidence.
If anything - it could be argued that the rumors were flying and doing this interview was an attempt to shut them down by calling out Utah fans and telling them there's no evidence to support the rumors they are falling for. End of story. Again - he goes so far as to essentially say "Hey! If you've got evidence, send it to me and I'll source it. But there's nothing to support these rumors."
I took that last statement as him trying to be nice to Utah fans (their audience) who have heard and believe the rumors by leaving them an out, while also telling them there's no evidence.
If he wanted to blow more smoke and keep the rumors flying, there are better ways to do that than by saying "there's rumors, but there's no evidence to support those rumors."
Again - in my view - this is BYU fans (many of whom haven't even heard the interview but are commenting on what they heard about it from someone else) looking for a reason to be mad at Checketts and the other guy - because they are obviously Utah honks on the Utah station trying to talk bad about BYU.
