Allowing pros to participate in the Olympics ruined the dreams of a lot of athletes. As one example, the Miracle on Ice, and the idea of a bunch of amateurs surprising the world, is no longer possible. As another example, those amateur athletes who would have made their nation’s Olympic basketball team now watch at home. Those countries with no funds for a national Olympic foundation no longer send athletes to the olympics to get beaten by well-funded pros (Romania in gymnastics, for example). The olympics continue to exist but they are now very different and to many less enjoyable. The same will happen in college sports. Football will still exist, but it will be much different, and I believe the motivation of keeping non-revenue sports will diminish.
