It stands to reason that a coaching staff as inexperienced all around as Kalani’s first staff was going to struggle. As a brand new D1 head coach, Kalani needed to be surrounded by offensive and defensive coordinators who were deeply experienced.
Love Ty Detmer to death but he should have started off as a QB coach at the D1 level and then been promoted. That would have been the most fair thing to him. Tuiaki was also not ready to be a D1 coordinator. He still doesn’t appear to be ready. Grimes is a tough one to figure out as he is amazing some games and others not. He’s learning on the job. That’s fine. But when Kalani is also an inexperienced head coach it turned into a hard thing to watch.
These coaches are all more experienced now, and they’ve brought in more experience. It just seems like Tom, having been a D1 head coach himself, should have been able to foresee that the initial coaching staff wasn’t a wise idea. He didn’t. He signed off on that staff. So Tom is learning in his job just like all of us learn in our jobs.
The program will be fine. The sky isn’t falling. Work needs to be done with football though.
