about why BYU isn’t in a P5 conference. If anyone thinks the latter was something within his control, I’m guessing they’re simply not familiar with BYU beyond watching the football team play.
What’s crazy to me is that Holmoe not only hired a first-time head coach and first-time defensive coordinator fresh off a 2-10 season along with a first-time offensive coordinator straight out of small high school football — but he extended that coach’s contract through the next four seasons despite results and records that have been collectively disappointing at best.
That said, he’s made enough good hires — both within the two big programs and in the other sports — and the department has been healthy enough overall, that I think it’s hard to call for someone to take over just yet, as long as we don’t get 2017–2019-esque results from his basketball hire in coming years.
Holmoe has a tougher job than some here will admit — myself included at times.
