It is dying on the surface the longer it is on the surface and
loses material in the process. That is why data about how long it will survive on a surface varies so much. They have found virus to still be present after quite some time, but indicated that it may not have enough material left to actually infect someone in the extreme cases and weakened infection in less extreme cases.
