...yes, it's clear indepdence is not sustainable in the long-run. It was never the long-term goal for BYU. I'm friends and long-time neighbor of TH, and I can promise you it was a bridge, not a long-term plan. It was NEVER expected to last 7 years. Things really got screwed up with the BIG-12, unfortunately, so we are in a position we were not expecting to be in.
Meanwhile, yes, I agree college football is a mess, but I disagree only a handful of schools are going to benefit from television. In reality, the P5 as a whole have benefited tremendously. Utah, for example, is in a ridiculously better position from a TV standpoint. The networks would never narrow it down to a handful of teams, because it would destroy the system. They need 4-5 conferences, even if it is just to serve 4-5 schools and to use the others as scheduling fodder. But they all benefit.
This is why everyone outside of the P5--including us!--are clamoring to get in. Yes, a handful of schools dominate, but it's a different situation financially. It's a true "haves" versus "have nots." Our best hope is still through the BIG-12, and that story isn't over, even if we're hanging by two fingers off of a cliff.
