really like the dollar cost average method. I daytrade for a living so I am probably a little more active than most. But one thing you might want to look at is selling premium with options. It is a fairly safe strategy that you can get a decent return on. But, to be honest, I don't do it, I have only read about it and tried a few trades on paper. So I can't really know much more about it than that.
