here's a dark horse that i haven't seen mentioned...max hall's fumble in the
4th quarter (approx 10 mns left in game) at #13 ranked ucla. Byu was driving at the ucla 13 yard line. They were down 20-17 and were poised to take the lead or at least tie when the fumble occurred.
They were stacked that year with Pitta, Collie, Hall and many others. They win that game maybe they win the next game against Tulsa and then go undefeated, but even if they still lose to Tulsa, they end as a one-loss team and maybe are higher than an undefeated Hawaii team at the end of the year based on a superior strength of schedule and are headed to a bcs bowl game.
