Sadly, likely much of the reason it is underutilized

is because Apple hasn't adopted NFC yet. I imagine if Apple added NFC to the iPhone that we would suddenly see retailers rush to add the capability. The problem now is that, even among Android phones, NFC hasn't been widely enough accepted by consumers.
