I think Microsoft's problem was trying to force it on desktop users
Apple was smart enough to make their phone/tablet software compatible, but not the same, as their desktop hardware. While a touch screen could be nice on a desktop (or even larger laptops), Microsoft's solution doesn't work well. For example, if you are using your computer using Metro, the Metro apps run as full screen, which is a waste of space on a desktop or a large laptop, where the point of having one is to use multiple applications, and have them on screen, all at the same time.

Microsoft's issue wasn't innovation, it was trying to do too much (and there by imposing some serious restrictions) across all types of devices.
