when Fred Merkle of the New York Baseball Giants committed a massive blunder (or "boner" in the parlance of the day) in 1908 by failing to touch second base after deciding the game was over once the winning run had crossed home plate thus setting up "the most controversial game of all time."

Definitely one of the biggest boners in MLB history.
