It has been interesting to watch BYU fans largely discuss this game so negatively. I’d love to hear other ideas beyond the criticisms that have been discussed ad-nauseam since Friday.
Some of my observations:
- We have never lost to SMU so we just penciled it in as a win
- They are a G5 team in our mind
- We have had Stellar QB play—even NFL guys mostly (Wilson, Hall, Baylor Romney, Slovis…even going back to Mangum and Taysom) so we are not used to just surviving…we are used to pro level QB’s…or dudes who are just short of it. This week i watched a lot of football and I noticed that most teams have stupid turnovers like Jake did…MOST teams
- BYU has not won a game since 2016 scoring less than 20 (against Arizona) and the year before that with SJSU…So a low scoring game feels like a loss
- The environment at SMU was small—small crowd and we have become BIG TIME… and i mean that seriously. Anyone who was at the SIU game to start the year knows we are a big time school.
Any other reasons?
I get all the stuff…A-rod has gotten stale, Retzlaff got overwhelmed and made some terrible TO’s, we were down to our 4th RB…
But the fact is this team we played was actually pretty darn good. They have paid some dudes and have been dominant on offense. We stopped them and found a way to win. Retzlaff made the perfect pitch and we were gutsy and pulled it off.
There are many reasons to be optimistic about this win, and lots of reasons it feels odd.
Thoughts?
